The big beachwear battle: Insta-kaftans v Love Island cutouts 11 Jul 1:00am The big beachwear battle: Insta-kaftans v Love Island cutouts
There is a standoff in swimwear this summer, between reality TV-style bodycon and boho waftiness. Which side will you be on? Beachwear has gone Montagues v Capulets this summer. Two holiday looks are vying for supremacy, although they are not alike in dignity. In the Capulet corner is the kaftan crew: influencers who appear to be permanently on holiday and permanently covering up in a kaftan. File glossy-magazine editors here. One former Vogue editor, Pippa Holt, has even set up her own kaftan brand. On the Montague side is the

On your bike: how high fashion adopted cycling sunglasses 10 Jul 12:24pm On your bike: how high fashion adopted cycling sunglasses
It’s not often you see Kim Kardashian, Princess Anne and Bella Hadid wearing the same accessories, but this year oversized performance shades are suddenly everywhereCycling’s sartorial reinvention is nothing new. Brands such as Rapha, CHPT3, Pas Normal Studios, Isadore and MAAP have offered style-conscious cyclists an alternative to poorly fitted fluro gear for a decade. The fashion world has paid attention too, with Moschino taking cycling style to the catwalk in 2015, and caps becoming essential wear for Williamsburg’s hipsters. But recently, a specific piece of cycling apparel has become co-opted by the fashion crowd: sunglasses.

Gareth Southgate’s signature style is uniting the country in joy 10 Jul 1:00am Gareth Southgate’s signature style is uniting the country in joy
More nice-dad-at-a-wedding-disco than David Beckham, the England manager’s look has turned him into an unlikely star Of course, Gareth Southgate humbly demurred when he was dubbed a style icon. “As a centre half with a face like I’ve got, then that’s a very rare position to be in,” he said, adding, “I’m not David Beckham.” But this summer, Southgate’s nice-guy look has brought the country together. There is nothing cool about Southgate’s signature style, in fact it is lack of affectation that has the nation swooning. His own Beckham comparison is apt: unlike that adopter of head-to-toe leather and kaftans, Southgate’s approach is not experimental, or effortful. It is sweet and solid.

Jumpsuits are the unrivalled look of the summer – but why are they so popular? 5 Jul 6:00am Jumpsuits are the unrivalled look of the summer – but why are they so popular?
Whether a playsuit for a party, a boilersuit for everyday or culotte-style for the heatwave, the jumpsuit is the must-have outfit right now. How did they become so ubiquitous? Once upon a time the sight of a jumpsuit was rare. Unless you were at a nightclub in the 70s, an all-in-one felt like a difficult look to pull off – too dressed up for the office or hanging out with your mates. But in recent years, all that has changed. Suddenly jumpsuits are everywhere; not to mention playsuits and boilersuits. At Asos, jumpsuit sales have gone up 70% compared with last year, according to design director Vanessa Spence. On global fashion search platform Lyst, searches for jumpsuits are up 61% year on year. And while demand usually peaks in the winter, June saw a 46% surge in searches on the previous month – proof that the jumpsuit has become the look of the summer. Jane Fonda’s stylist recently called jumpsuits

Fashion’s Grand slam: why Wimbledon is a masterclass on how to look smart in the summer 4 Jul 6:00am Fashion’s Grand slam: why Wimbledon is a masterclass on how to look smart in the summer
From dreamy Ralph Lauren uniforms to all-white jumpsuits, your summer style directive is courtside SW19 – channelling Meghan and Kate, Anna Wintour and Serena Williams Can we talk about the weather? Is there even any other subject right now? It is the beginning and end of every conversation. How marvellous it is, how lucky we are, obvs, segueing rapidly into the kicker: what on earth to wear? Holiday weather is a breeze when you are pulling a dress on over a bikini. But when you are still on-duty and expected to look smart, summer dressing is a challenge.

Ten ways to make fashion greener 24 Jun 1:00am Ten ways to make fashion greener
Sustainable style is back on the agenda after MPs announced an inquiry into ‘fast’ clothes. This is what a greener clothing future might look likeTo forecast the fashion of the future is a perilous business. Many years ago I road-tested compostable clothes for this newspaper. The corn-starch separates promised much: they potentially allowed us a guilt-free way of consuming fashion at a frenetic pace without the nagging thought of them festering in landfill for eternity. Unfortunately the garments I dutifully wore all day – praying that they would not begin composting while I was on the tube – never caught on. Surprising, that. But this time, I’m back with bigger, bolder predictions, and for once I have some firepower. On Friday, the parliamentary environmental audit committee, led by Mary Creagh, announced it would investigate the

Zayn has unexpectedly become a clothing action hero, fearlessly enacting style stunts I’m waaaay too scared to pull off myself When I was a child I had a disturbingly large array of imaginary friends. They lived in their own country and had occasionally fiery relationships with each other. One was the polar opposite of me: a carefree soul called Jill who, in retrospect, was definitely a hippy: she did whatever the hell she wanted everyday, all day, and was so laid-back she was basically horizontal (or actually so laid-back that she didn’t actually exist). I think about Jill as I channel former One Directioner

How Gareth Southgate became an unstoppable style icon 19 Jun 9:18am How Gareth Southgate became an unstoppable style icon
The 90s plaid shirts have been replaced with three-piece suits, expensive shoes and a neat beard. Is the England manager now the most fashionable man in football? There are pressing questions to be answered in the wake of England’s victory over Tunisia in their opening game of the World Cup. Should Dele Alli have been subbed earlier? Is Marcus Rashford a cert for starting against Panama? But for an – admittedly niche – section of the football-loving English populace, one question overshadows all others: just when exactly did Gareth Southgate become a style icon? The Southgate look – the three-piece suit tailored to within an inch of its life, neat beard, expensive shoes – is not an overnight phenomenon. Last night’s impressive dark blue number, teamed with a red, white and blue tie, is merely the apogee of a style journey at least a decade in the making.

The first time I went on the BBC’s Question Time, in February 2012, I wanted to make a decent impression. The fact that I looked like Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone wouldn’t play in my favour – on my Twitter feed, people regularly queried whether I was taking time off from my paper round when I appeared on TV. Why the man behind Max Mara is the most influential fashion designer you’ve never heard of 5 Jun 12:49pm Why the man behind Max Mara is the most influential fashion designer you’ve never heard of
Ian Griffiths is a British ex-punk and not what you might expect from the classic Italian brand One night in 1982, a 19-year-old club kid called Ian Griffiths, who had recently dropped out of an architecture degree because “there was just too much fun to be had in Manchester, to be honest”, was at a party in Wythenshawe. He was living on £37.50 a week benefit, and “perfectly happy. I made all my own clothes, I got into all the clubs free.” When the Haçienda nightclub opened in the city, Griffiths went every night without fail for the first six months – “and I didn’t eat anyway, so there was no requirement for food. But there we were, wasted on the sofa, and the news came on that Margaret Thatcher was considering conscription for the Falklands war for the unemployed. So I thought I’d better do something. That’s how I ended up studying fashion.” The brand Max Mara conjures an image of camel coats and conservative northern Italian style, so Ian Griffiths, its designer for three decades, is not what you might expect. The man sitting opposite me in the Guardian canteen – the unstarry interview location was his choice, being close to where he lives when he is in London – is the most influential British designer you have never heard of. With annual sales reported to be more than £1bn, Max Mara is that rare thing, a fashion-week label whose heart is in the real world. For six decades, Max Mara did not have a public-facing designer – a unique move in the gladiatoral arena that is Milan fashion week, where Donatella Versace, Giorgio Armani and Dolce & Gabbana are all represented by personalities as well as brands. And then in February last year

Chloë Sevigny: ‘I didn’t want to name names. I think they’re commonly known as assholes anyway’ 6 May 3:00am Chloë Sevigny: ‘I didn’t want to name names. I think they’re commonly known as assholes anyway’
More than 20 years ago, the actor was anointed ‘the coolest girl in the world’. As her new film opens, she talks about A-list movie stars hogging the best TV roles and why she chose not to add her voice to #MeToo Chloë Sevigny walks into the bar of a hotel in downtown New York like a discreet but still conquering hero: leather jacket, red lipstick, round John Lennon-style sunglasses and a laugh that draws the eyes of the room. She recently moved back to Manhattan from a far-flung neighbourhood of Brooklyn, where she had gone in search of a quieter life. For decades, the actor enjoyed the buzz of being a well-known figure, until suddenly, in her early 40s, she didn’t. “But it didn’t work out,” she says, drily. Brooklyn was too quiet, too far; not Sevigny’s style at all and now she is back – greeting people she knows every few paces – a somewhat reluctant queen of the scene. It is more than 20 years since Sevigny was anointed

The best high-street cleansing creams | Sali Hughes 10 Mar 3:00am The best high-street cleansing creams | Sali Hughes
Cleansing creams need not cost a fortune Cleansing cream doesn’t enjoy much attention these days. Skincare experts favour melting balms or Japanese-style oils, consumers prefer wipes and foaming washes, but a simple cream has much to recommend it. It’s versatile, removing makeup well at night ( I don’t believe a double cleanse is necessary on lighter days, and I use it for my second cleanse only when wearing foundation and/or sunblock), and refreshing an already clean-ish face nicely in the morning without being so rich as to feel like overkill. I don’t believe cleansing creams need to cost a fortune, either; I take the view that if one is to economise, one should start with what sinks down the plughole, not with what stays on the skin. The cheapest of my favourites is

Throwing shade: winter sunglasses are a street-style hit at fashion week 7 Mar 12:30pm Throwing shade: winter sunglasses are a street-style hit at fashion week
The recent fashion weeks established distinctive new trends on the sunglasses front Temperatures may have plummeted as fashion week played out over the past four weeks, but it will take more than a beast from the east to make the fashion pack leave their opticals at home (American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour famously left her signature shades on to meet the Queen at the Richard Quinn show during the London leg of shows). Call it eternal optimism – or call it never a street-style photo opportunity to be lost – but sunglasses were out in force and three distinctive tribes formed ...

Vivienne Westwood and her husband, Andreas Kronthaler, celebrate their quarter-century together with a ‘homage’ showA portrait of a marriage was presented at the Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood fashion show in Paris on Saturday, and it wasn’t a conventional one. There were brides wearing ruffled white gowns with thigh-high lace-up boots, and nuns’ habits refashioned in chiffon, and models wearing Boudicca breast plates. There were also three young male podium dancers from Leeds on the catwalk who had pink circles scribbled on their faces, and were voguing with wild abandon. The show was a “homage”, Kronthaler said, to Westwood, his wife of more than 25 years. In a love letter distributed to guests, he described the designer as “my collaborator, my friend and partner, my teacher and of course as my muse”, and explained that he had revisited and rethought many of her most famous creations for the collection.

Ex-footballer helps his Kent & Curwen label step out from Savile Row as others push at ideas of menswear and even clothes London fashion week men’s is dedicated – unsurprisingly – to finding a vision of modern British manhood. And David Beckham, Essex boy, football captain, dad, style setter and outright brand, has been a pin-up of mainstream masculinity for two decades now. Kent & Curwen, a rejuvenated brand founded on Savile Row in 1926, has been working with the him since 2015 when he become majority owner. To celebrate a new store on Floral Street – a move from Savile Row – Beckham hosted a lunch on Sunday. The menu was appropriate: pie and mash followed by sticky toffee pudding. Kent & Curwen worked with Perry Ogden – the photographer behind the 1999 book Pony Kids, portraits of traveller teenagers and their horses – on its autumn-winter 2018 images. Displayed around the new store, these worked well to bring out the Beckham-branded type of British pedigree, one that comes with a bit of grit. They are of young boxers in Bethnal Green and footballers on Hackney Marshes, where a young Beckham played.

Thanks to two hit adaptations of her books, the writer has had a big impact on fashion this year Did you ever suspect that one of 2017’s key fashion references would be “dispossessed 1842 Upper Canadian housemaid”? How about “enslaved walking womb in a dystopian future”? Perhaps not. But in an unsettling year the TV shows that had the biggest impact on our wardrobes centred on two such protagonists. In case you missed the references, I’m talking about Alias Grace and The Handmaid’s Tale. Both were based on books by Margaret Atwood and both featured women whose lives were ruled and ruined by the patriarchy. Both characters’ clothes were symbols of their repression: their dresses covered them up; their bonnets restricted their view.

Next season’s long sleeves, midi lengths and muted tones showcase prudent aesthetic in challenging times for retailer The Marks & Spencer fashion showcase operates on three levels. It is a sneak peek of the choice pieces which will be on sale next season. It is a litmus test as to which catwalk trends will break out of the high-fashion bubble and make it big on the high street. Lastly – and this is why it is viewed with interest beyond the fashion world – it is a biannual insight into the self-image and strategy of a retail giant. Twice a year the mood in the M&S boardroom – bullish or timid, experimental or nostalgic – is spelt out in hemlines, price points and colour combinations.

‘Pieces that are going to last’: Erdem x H&M collection hits stores 2 Nov 2017, 1:39pm ‘Pieces that are going to last’: Erdem x H&M collection hits stores
Not as cheap as H&M’s usual designer tie-ups, Erdem’s collection for the high street focuses on quality wardrobe classics Leopard-print coats, pyjama sets and sequinned ballgowns are set to be the signifiers of style this party season if the launch of Erdem’s collaboration with H&M is anything to go by. The highly anticipated collection went on sale on Thursday morning. And while there were queues from midnight on Wednesday night at H&M shops nationwide, far from the pushing, shoving and even police cars seen at its previous launches, a ticketing system – splitting shoppers into 14 groups of 20 with 10-minute time slots from 9am to 12.30pm – resulted in a civilised atmosphere: queuers could get their wristbands, head off to a nearby coffee shop to warm up, and come back at their allotted time.

What I wore this week: silver | Jess Cartner-Morley 27 Oct 2017, 8:00am What I wore this week: silver | Jess Cartner-Morley

That was six years ago, and I still wear that skirt loads. Actually, if I remember correctly, the Carrie turned into a bit of a cult – Whistles even had to give it its own email address, possibly a first for a skirt – but the revelation, for me, was the colour.
