Meghan’s maternity wardrobe: what does a modern duchess wear?30m Meghan’s maternity wardrobe: what does a modern duchess wear?
With the royal baby news, the spotlight will now fall on the Duchess of Sussex’s maternity style. So what can people expect as she navigates ‘bump watch’? Being modern is Meghan’s USP. She is the modern duchess, hauling the royal family into the 21st century with her artisan elderflower cakes and feminism and cross-body bags. And now, with The Happy News, Meghan is navigating a very 21st-century challenge: how a thirtysomething first-time mother incorporates a baby bump into the sleek, streamlined identity of the independent-minded modern woman. Meghan’s maternity wardrobe will be scrutinised and debated almost as much as her wedding dress. Getting pregnant while newly minted into the royal family, when the spotlight on her is at full beam, will make the focus on Meghan’s maternity look even more intense than it would have been in a year or two. There has been no shortage of royal babies this decade, but poor Kate was so wretchedly sick that she had to be excused from smile-and-wave duties for much of her pregnancies, so the public appetite for princesses-with-bumps is far from sated. And anyway, it was all very different with the Duchess of Cambridge. Kate’s USP was simply that she was Not Posh. She didn’t have a triple-barrelled name that sounded like an Austrian ski resort and people in her family had actual jobs, and that was enough to blow our tiny minds back in the innocent days at the beginning of this decade. We didn’t expect her to be modern as well. That’s where Meghan comes in.

Black tights or bare legs? Autumn’s crucial style debate returns 9 Oct 11:06am Black tights or bare legs? Autumn’s crucial style debate returns
It’s the million-dollar question for power dressers everywhere: have tights come in from the cold? There are three fundamental questions that must be addressed at this point in every year. Question one: is it time to switch the heating on? Question two: whose family are we having for Christmas? And, drumroll, question three: can we wear black tights? The first two are mere detail; the third is everything. The opaque tights issue is a thorny one in fashion. It divides women along class and generational lines. Class lines, first, because going bare-legged in winter is a high-maintenance choice. To put it bluntly, having your legs bare in winter is no hardship if you have a driver waiting; it is perfectly doable if you must wait four minutes for an Uber; it is a battle if your bus isn’t coming for 20.

New designers are using copyrighted logos with impunity while high-fashion houses such as Balenciaga are dabbling in downmarket ironyForget cocktail dresses and crocodile “It bags” – among key style trends now are T-shirts that wouldn’t look out of place on a market stall. Earlier this month the buzzy catwalk brand Balenciaga released its spring/summer advertising campaign. The key reference point? Not the rarified inspiration that could be expected for such a storied fashion house but a humble carrier bag for German supermarket chain Edeka. The yellow and blue colours of the store’s branding was reworked with the phrase “The Power of Dreams” and a Balenciaga logo.

Margaret Atwood: the unlikely style soothsayer of 2017 27 Dec 2017, 1:00am Margaret Atwood: the unlikely style soothsayer of 2017
Thanks to two hit adaptations of her books, the writer has had a big impact on fashion this year Did you ever suspect that one of 2017’s key fashion references would be “dispossessed 1842 Upper Canadian housemaid”? How about “enslaved walking womb in a dystopian future”? Perhaps not. But in an unsettling year the TV shows that had the biggest impact on our wardrobes centred on two such protagonists. In case you missed the references, I’m talking about Alias Grace and The Handmaid’s Tale. Both were based on books by Margaret Atwood and both featured women whose lives were ruled and ruined by the patriarchy. Both characters’ clothes were symbols of their repression: their dresses covered them up; their bonnets restricted their view.

Silver is useful, because it takes boringly easy clothes and makes them look dynamic and exciting When I bought my Carrie silver-foil midi-length skirt from Whistles, I remember thinking that a silver skirt was a slightly ridiculous purchase, even by my standards, and I was left wondering if I would ever wear it. That was six years ago, and I still wear that skirt loads. Actually, if I remember correctly, the Carrie turned into a bit of a cult – Whistles even had to give it its own email address, possibly a first for a skirt – but the revelation, for me, was the colour. Before that, I associated silver with Courrèges-style A-line minis and tiny, shiny dresses such as

Li Yuchun: meet the pop star taking gender neutral style to China 15 Oct 2017, 5:00am Li Yuchun: meet the pop star taking gender neutral style to China
She’s outsold Drake and Beyoncé, holds Tilda Swinton as a style icon and is becoming one of the most sought-after ambassadors in the fashion industry –confirmation that androgynous fashion is big business around the globe Li Yuchun, also known as Chris Lee, is China’s biggest pop star but you might not have necessarily heard of her. So here is some context: the current darling of China’s dominant pop genre, Mandopop, Lee’s 2016 album, Growing Wild, outsold both Drake’s One Dance and Beyoncé’s Lemonade in the first 16 days of its release. In the same year, Lee (also known as Li Yuchun) signed a deal with L’Oréal, starred in two films and became an ambassador for Gucci, one of the world’s biggest fashion brands. And now, she has been named brand ambassador for Diesel. Not bad for someone you likely just had to Google. But what is really significant about Lee – and this is by no means to diminish her album sales – is her style, musically and aesthetically. Because just as her music is heavy on electric basslines, rather than saccharine harmonies, her look is not typically pop star pretty, but androgynous. She has short, spiky hair, and a wardrobe full of Balenciaga-style, oversized mannish pieces and luxe sportswear, such as Gucci tracksuits, beanie hats and Nike trainers. In a world of bubblegum, manufactured pop – Lee found fame when she won China’s version of The X Factor, Super Girl, in 2005 – she is a very different kind of style icon.

Hervé Léger obituary 9 Oct 2017, 1:22pm Hervé Léger obituary
Fashion designer who created the body-conscious bandage dress that was a hit with models and film stars on the red carpetHervé Léger never intended a life in fashion. He wanted to be a sculptor, and endured a year studying at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris before he fled education to get his hands directly on materials. His curiosity about the properties of fibres, from human hair to silk jersey, was the base of his greatest success, the bandage dresses that were the most sympathetic approach to the body-conscious fashion of the 1990s. Léger, who has died aged 60 of a ruptured aneurysm, instinctively moulded cloth to display and flatter the body beneath. Fabrics incorporating elastane (aka Lycra or Spandex) fibres for stretch were extensively used in underwear, and exercise and dance kit in the 80s, but less so in fashion; too vulgar. Léger found his first stretch-assisted knitted jersey as a discarded experiment at a textile factory. Because he had experience of shaping hats from fabric strips, he realised he could make the weird stuff into a dress that would follow female curves by assembling strips, panels and tubes to run round or diagonally across the body (most dresses are cut vertically, falling from shoulders or waist). His first full collection in this style was shown in 1991, when supermodels such as Cindy Crawford, plus actresses on the new red carpets, still had considerable curves, and a professional wish to show them off.

Strike a pose: how street-style photography stole fashion week 6 Oct 2017, 7:56am Strike a pose: how street-style photography stole fashion week
Pictures of stylish showgoers on the street are now everywhere in fashion. But photographers have complained their images are used without permission – prompting the #NoFreePhotos campaign. Where does street style go from here? Street-style stars, those fashion-forward folks papped outside shows, have arguably become as trend-setting as any model or celebrity. At one of this season’s most hyped shows, JW Anderson in London, for example, over 50 photographers swarmed outside the entrance looking for their photographic prey, making it hard for the more unremarkably dressed among us to reach the door. In the last five years, the scene has grown exponentially. The shot outside the show is now as influential – and valuable – as the one of the model on the catwalk. But attending the shows in a photograph-worthy outfit does not a street-style star make. For that you need the black-clad photographers – now a familiar presence outside shows, snapping editors, influencers and insiders – willing to take the pictures that then get picked up off their Instagram feeds and used by the street-style stars themselves, often then becoming fodder for a slew of other fashionable feeds. But these images are often used without the photographers’ permission, and without a fee.

Ralph Lauren makes his cars the stars in elitist extravaganza 13 Sep 2017, 6:39am Ralph Lauren makes his cars the stars in elitist extravaganza
The designer invited just 300 guests to his New York fashion week show which was a celebration of affluence and exclusivity The late 19th-century arbiter of Manhattan society Samuel Ward McAllister coined the phrase “The Four Hundred” to describe the number of people who really matter in New York at any given time. Ralph Lauren, who has built a personal fortune of $5.8bn (£4.4bn) by distilling the top notes of affluent east coast society into blazers, polo shirts and perfumes, revived this concept on Tuesday evening with an ultra-exclusive runway show, bucking the inclusive, consumer-facing direction that has defined most of New York fashion week. In contrast to Alexander Wang’s Saturday night event, staged guerilla-style on downtown streets, Ralph Lauren selected just 300 guests to be chauffeur-driven out of the city for one glamorous evening, staging a runway show and black-tie dinner upstate among a personal collection of valuable vintage sports cars.

The pop star is making inroads in fashion with an impressive show combining motocross stunts and colourful surf aesthetics It takes a lot to get the fashion crowd properly revved up at a catwalk, but Rihanna pulled it off at her Fenty x Puma show in New York on Sunday night. It wasn’t the clothes that had the style press on the edge of their seats as much as the preamble, during which a team of motocross stunt performers vroomed up ramps and were propelled into the air to perform somersaults, flips and other seemingly impossible tricks. The striking set, which comprised towering spot-lit dunes of glittering pink sand, added to the drama.

Victoria Beckham pairs ice-cream colours with understated elegance 10 Sep 2017, 3:13pm Victoria Beckham pairs ice-cream colours with understated elegance
The British fashion designer presents a collection about the ‘many powers of femininity’ that’s both stylistically elevated and familiar The most surprising thing about spending a morning in the presence of the fashion arm of Beckham Enterprises – or, to be specific, sitting opposite David and Brooklyn while they watch Victoria’s spring/summer 2018 catwalk show – is how much more relaxed the experience feels than much of the rest of New York fashion week. Consider that Saturday night was dominated by two style spectaculars: the Alexander Wang show, in which models performed “guerilla” catwalk shows across New York, while flanked by portable speaker systems, lighting rigs and a cavalcade of Harley Davidsons; and the Philipp Plein “Good Gone Bad” event, where models vied for attention with booming music and Dita von Teese doing a burlesque routine in a giant Martini glass.

From tarot cards to macabre hoodies: why witchcraft is all the rage 6 Sep 2017, 7:15am From tarot cards to macabre hoodies: why witchcraft is all the rage
Fashion designers are increasingly flirting with witch style – creating a whole new uniform for the modern day coven Vivienne Westwood dedicated her 1983 collection to witches, and paganism and the occult was a recurring theme for Alexander McQueen, who traced his family tree back to the Salem witch trials. But this autumn, supernatural vibrations are being felt by a new generation, as witches cast their spell over everything from fashion to politics. “I’ve always loved witches,” says designer Edward Meadham, as he explains his inspirations for his latest collection. “In my work I have always tried to distort the perceived meanings of the visual female archetypes, including witches,” he says. “For me, they are the primary example of the feared and maligned women.”

Empower dressing: fashion’s new mood for Autumn 5 Sep 2017, 12:48pm Empower dressing: fashion’s new mood for Autumn
Fashion’s embrace of cosy clothes for watching box sets is over. This season, designers are centring on a sharpened-up look – power dressing that empowers The fashionable position to take on fashion, these days, is that trends are dead and that individual style and self-expression are what matters. The old certainties – skirts are hereby decreed knee length for six months, only camel coats are to be worn for the foreseeable – belong to a different era. To a bygone world in which political insiders gave ballpark-accurate election predictions and the Oscar statuette didn’t get handed to the wrong film in front of a global TV audience. Now the world is sick of experts, and that goes for fashion too. Except in September. Because right now, the world needs fashion. The September issues of magazines, heavy as hymn books and immortalised by a glossy documentary, are testament to the power fashion has at this moment. Women who rely on their own style to steer their wardrobes the rest of the year are, at this point in the calendar as at no other, keen to be told which coat to buy and when to start wearing black tights. The system in which one consistent look could preside over a whole autumn and winter has been blown apart by an insatiable appetite for newness that demands we hit wardrobe-refresh every three weeks. September’s back-to-school moment, when you pack away the sundresses and straw baskets and revamp your look, is the one fixed red-letter-day that remains.

Queen of cool: how off-duty Diana became style’s new muse 2 Aug 2017, 1:22am Queen of cool: how off-duty Diana became style’s new muse
Diana has always been a style icon – but only now has she has become truly hip. Rihanna, Beyoncé and Alexa Chung have all been referencing her look and celebrating her at her most aliveFor the first time ever, Princess Diana is cool. Diana has been many things – the fairytale bride, the ill-treated wife, the pioneer of revenge dressing and, finally, the queen of hearts – but hip is the one thing she has never been. At her wedding in 1981, and again at her funeral in 1997, she was a tabloid goddess. In between, she was a Vogue cover star. But she was never an avant-garde muse – until now. Virgil Abloh made his name as Kanye West’s creative director, and his Off-White label is now one of the hottest in the fashion industry. A profile in W magazine called him the “king of social media superinfluencers” and “a canny translator of youth culture”. His show in Florence last month was an installation combining fashion and poetry created in collaboration with the American artist Jenny Holzer; a political statement that Abloh described as being about “immigration and the plight of refugees”. Abloh has art-directed an album for Jay-Z and designed limited-edition sneakers for Nike.

It’s been a while, chiefly because I became a bit bored with the swooshy, Marilyn-style flicks over complex-shadowed lids that are near-ubiquitous on Instagram, and decided to park them for a bit, opting instead for smudgy, smoky, soft dark brown, grey or navy pencil. But a recent rewatch of

What I wore this week: a khaki utility jacket 23 Jun 2017, 7:59am What I wore this week: a khaki utility jacket
If you’re a jeans-wearer, I promise you will find it useful A few places where I’ve seen khaki utility jackets recently: on Kate Moss, teamed with black jeans and a leopardprint scarf, spotted out and about in Highgate. On a beach in Ibiza one afternoon when it got chilly and the woman whose lovely soft linen tiered maxi beach dress I had been admiring (didn’t get close enough to sneak a peek at the label, I’m afraid. Kalita, maybe? Lisa Marie Fernandez? Not cheap, anyway) pulled one out of her monogrammed raffia beach tote. On the Valentino resort catwalk in New York, embroidered and worn over a white shirt dress. Oh, and last but not least, on me: this Topshop feathered number has been my go-to spring/summer jacket for two months. Kate Moss, Ibiza, Valentino, feathers. Join the dots: the khaki shirt-jacket isn’t a dowdy utility jacket any more. A jacket that was once camouflage, and therefore deliberately drab, has become a look-at-me item. This makes it perfect for Glastonbury, where clothes whose practical surface belies a thinly disguised vanity are what style is all about. (See the backstage-battered Barbour jacket, the surprisingly flattering cut of Hunter wellies when worn with cut-offs.)

Gina Fratini obituary 8 Jun 2017, 8:24am Gina Fratini obituary
Dress designer who specialised in flattering, flowing garments that attracted princesses among her clienteleTextiles were not what fashion was about in the first half of the 1960s, when an adequately outrageous outfit could be extracted from a short, narrow length of Acrilan, Dicel or Bri-Nylon. That was not the style of Gina Fratini, who has died aged 85; her interest was in the stuffs themselves, preferably natural fibres, in quantity. She became a professional designer in 1964 and was ready with bolts of cotton and silk as skimpiness in synthetics peaked and lost novelty around 1967. Fratini then became an important player in a London-based, fabric-intensive, fantasy style over the next few years when it was unremarkable to go about daily business dressed as an illustration by
